Peacekeepers
Maple Grove's peer mediation programme, Peacekeepers, has been in operation for well over a couple of decades. Over time, it has grown and evolved along with our understanding of conflict resolution. It has become an integral part of our school philosophy, which values peace, conflict resolution, and cooperation.
How does it work?
Students volunteer to be Peacekeepers. They meet weekly for a term to train in the process, to role play problems and solutions, and to discuss experiences and challenges encountered. Each day during the lunch recess, a team of three students -- mixed in age from Kindergarten to Grade Five -- are available and work together as the need arises to help students in conflict to discuss and resolve difficulties peacefully. The duty of Peacekeepers is not to solve others' problems, but to facilitate resolution. The older students, therefore, also act as mentors for the younger.
